Our main effort has been in the theoretical modeling of various phenomena involving the interactions of light and admolecules/particles in the vicinity of a solid surface.  This ranges from laser-induced particle-removal from contaminated surfaces to the application of surface plasmon resonance to the modification of molecular fluorescence and biosensing at metal surfaces.  More recently, work has been carried out in the modeling of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and interaction of molecules with complex structures such as the tip of  near field scanning microscope (NSOM), a sinusoidal grating, and a microcavity made of multilayer structure.

In the study of SERS, the effects of substrate temperatures and microscopic dielectric properties have been accounted for. Recent experiment has been done leading to qualitative verification of our model on SERS as a function of substrate temperature (from 100 K to 300 K). In addition we have also studied these effects at cryogenic temperatures accounting for the effects of the Pauli exclusion principle.

As a continuing effort, modeling work on the molecular fluorescence at rough and other complicated surface structures has been carried on from time to time.  We have recently proposed a relatively powerful approach to the modeling of this phenomena using the Green dyadic formulation.  In a related project, we have also been working on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor since the collaboration first started with the Amersham International research group in England in 1989.  Our particular interest is to study the effects of the physical (optical) factors on the sensitivity of the sensor. Our goal is to look for mechanisms to increase the sensitivity of this sensor to cover the range of about 10e-9 to 10e-15 molar in concentration of the biosamples to be detected (e.g., certain specific antibodies in serum).  To this end, we have studied the possible enhancement effects using a "particle (colloidal gold) linkage technique" and the effects on the sensitivity due to the variation of temperatures in the sensing environment.

Another collaboration took place in 1991 with the IBM (Almaden) group in the study of the laser cleaning technique of contaminated surfaces.  In this technique, a liquid layer (microns thick) is deposited on the surface and exploded by the fast heating of an excimer laser pulse (~20 ns). This project has since been completed by the IBM group, although we still keep our interest alive on the study of optothermal effects from the interaction of a solid surface with a laser pulse.

Besides surface physics, we have also engaged recently in the study of energy deposition of fast particles in matter.  For this, we have applied previous results worked out in relativistic quantum mechanics concerning atomic sum rules. This represents a continuation of work in an area I first studied as a graduate student.
